Anyone who has ever marched in a drum and bugle corps knows that a successful unit needs more than talent on the field. It needs dedicated people behind the scenes, who don’t get to bask in the limelight; or get standing ovations from the audience, but whose contributions are no less important than that of the marching members. It takes a special person to do the hundred and one chores that need to be done, without fanfare. Someone has to load and unload the color guard or percussion equipment, drive the chase vehicle, give out water, cook the burgers, pick up a stranded member, ease a bruised ego, and supply emotional support when things aren’t going as smoothly as one would like. Sometimes, just being good listener and sharing a story is all one needs to get back on track.
Frank Dooley was such a man, and those who knew him, valued his friendship and now feel a great sense of loss. Newer members of the Crusader Seniors may not know him, because his failing health kept him from being active the last few years, but ask any long time veterans and they will speak highly of Frank.
I was proud to consider Frank to be my friend, and I will miss this “Giant.”
