Is everyone dried out from Brewster
yet? Can you believe we actually had a good time in the rain?
There we were, for those who missed it, in what seemed like F-4 hurricane
conditions, waiting in the rain,
and then it was our turn. Finally! We all struggled to separate the sleeves in
our annoying plastic raincoats
and thought if the Crusader Seniors have nothing else, we have fortitude!
Endurance! Who’s better than us?
No one!! But then a funny thing happened…the BAC Drum Corps Angel smiled down
upon us and the
rain stopped - much like the Red Sea parting-- and we marched in semi-dry
conditions. And then our
Fearless Leader had made friends with the owner of a restaurant back where we
were waiting, and so the
buses were directed to Adeo’s Restaurant after the parade for some warm drinks
and cold beer and free food.
Amazing.

We have a new member of the baritone section of the horn line,
Sue Marciano. She hails from Beverly, MA
and is the mother of three. Sue was a marching member of the Leominster
Joanettes in 84-85. As a fellow
all-girl corps member, (mine being the famous I.C. Rockettes from Salem) I
couldn’t be happier. Power to the
Sisters! Thanks also to our own Donna Dennesen (and fellow I.C. Rockettes
member) for talking us up and
getting Sue to come on down and join.
The powers-that-be (okay, myself and Jim Gillette) have decided
that we will give a little biography of new
people when they join the Corps. You never know who may have marched where and
it could be interesting.
Sue was our most recent hire, as it were, but we thought we could go back to
others that joined this year, and
then maybe give a little background of other members that have been here, one
month a colorguard member,
and another a drummer… you get the idea. Maybe we could even do instructors!
But then Rick Connor’s piece
would span several pages! I am not implying in any way that Mr. Connor is
getting up there in age, but Aunt Mildred
has been regaling us for years with grand stories of his rather, …well, ’full’
life.
And speaking of stories… what a segue… we have another new
feature to this newsletter that will include
interesting/nostalgic/funny stories about marching with the Crusaders
Senior Corps. We are a lively, funny
group and many humorous things have happened, and you know, if the stories get
embellished with time, so be it.
Art Kellerman has been gracious enough to write up a memory he keeps close to
his heart for this month, and I
encourage anyone who wishes to participate in this to let me know for future
months. This is the story in his words:
Crusader Senior Flashback
Most veterans in our Corps remember Buster Bradway. He played
cymbals and bass drum proudly for us and he
is missed today. I recall the show in Pennsylvania that was going to be
his last before retiring from drum corps.
He had noticed the tradition carried on by DCI age-outs; they would leave their
shoes on the edge of the field after
their last show to symbolize that they were all done. Buster thought he would
make a similar gesture, and upon
leaving the field, he hung his shoes up on the fence by their laces. He wasn’t
thinking about the fact he would have
to walk back to the buses in his stocking feet, through a parking lot of crushed
stone, stone that had been baking
under a hot sun for several hours. I can see him now, hopping in pain while
carrying a very large bass drum.
May you rest in peace, Buster.

and onto Broadway ending at Teele Square.

The parade assembles on the northeast side
of the Cambridge Common, the baseball/soccer field. Their site says there is
parking on Garden Street, but don’t quote me on it if there isn’t. Units
will depart from the Common at the Waterhouse St. exit, proceed easterly on
Garden St., through Harvard Square, westerly on Mt. Auburn to Coolidge Avenue.
The reviewing stand is on Coolidge Avenue. The parade route is 1.7 miles long.
Parking is limited in Cambridge so the bus
is a big plus for this parade.
We will have a practice for horns and drums
after the parade, per Jack’s email. We can get some lunch and then get some
work done. We can make it a fun day. Hey, if we made Brewster in the rain fun,
which we did, then we can make Memorial Day fun!
